I **love** washi tape. Normally I use it in my planner but I saw people in some Facebook groups that had used it to make phone covers. They’d use either paper or card stock, decorate it with washi, and put that between their phone and a clear phone cover so it showed through. I knew this was something I needed to do too - I love to change my phone covers frequently and this was a super affordable way to do it!
I started by buying a clear case at a local store for $5 (they are also on Amazon for around the same price, depending on phone model). I wanted to make a template for the paper part that the washi tape went on - that way I could cut it out with my Silhouette and make it 1000 times easier. I made the template by hand, traced it into the software, and voila! Easy peasy! I used this type of card stock [you may be able to find the Georgia-Pacific brand at your local store for a little cheaper] so they will be a bit more sturdier (and I already had the cut settings for the card stock from a previous project, lets be honest about ALL of the reasons lol).
With the templates cut out, I started out with a main washi that I wanted to use, found some matching washi and made a pattern. Now, I am not normally a decorator - matching things doesn’t come easy to me... but making these phone covers has sparked a creativity to me that I didn’t know existed! It is so much FUN! Check out some of the ones that I’ve made:
I’ve posted pictures of my creations on Instagram and Facebook groups for the shops that I’ve bought some of the washi from, and have had such a huge response that I’ve decided to sell my templates. It was definitely a labor of love to create them, but I want anyone interested to have them at an affordable price! Here’s the links for the ones I’ve got as of right now:
If there is a phone model that I don’t currently have a template available for, please email me at blocksandneedles@gmail.com and I can see what I can do to get one made for you!
Tag me in your pictures of your completed washi covers on Instagram - www.instagram.com/sara_harrod - I’d love to see them!
Happy crafting!

Hey Tina! It took a while for me to make my templates. Because I’m sure no one else wanted to have to go through that too, I have my templates for sale in my Etsy shop for an affordable price. I even include the silhouette files, jpg files for cricut, and a printed PDF for those who might not have a cutting machine. :) The link is just above in the post, or I can send it to you! If I don’t have your specific phone model, please let me know and I’ll add it to the list. Thanks so much for all the love!
It’s embarrassing to admit this, but I will 🙈 I wanted to do this so bad for a while but I assumed everyone was covering their phone with the washi then putting it in clear case 🤦🏻♀️ Needless to say it takes a while and I have the first one I ever did still! I’m assuming to make a template you measure out your phone?? But I didn’t think of that before and even more embarrassing - I have a cricut and silhouette 🤦🏻♀️
So excited to find your blog!!!
